How to Get Your General Contractor’s License in New Jersey Step-by-Step

The requirements for obtaining a New Jersey general contractor license have changed for 2025. Below is a breakdown of the updated process:

1. Submit an Application

Complete and submit an application to the Division of Banking and Insurance, including the Disclosure Statement page. If you plan to offer financing options, you must submit a Licensing Application to the Department of Banking and Insuranc

2. Provide Documentation

Provide proof of general liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $500,000 per occurrence.

Ensure you have workers' compensation and commercial general liability insurance as part of your application package.

Submit proof of a compliance bond or similar security worth at least $100,000 to cover potential claims.

3. Complete Education or Experience Requirements

New applicants must complete an apprenticeship, attend a trade school, or have at least two years of supervised experience in the field.

4. Pass an Exam

New applicants must pass an exam to become licensed. Exam details and study materials will be provided upon application submission.

5. Pay Application Fees

All new applications require a non-refundable application fee.

6. Renew Your License

Current registrations expire on March 31, 2025. Renewal applications are due starting January 2025.

Renewals must be processed electronically using the Banking Online Services feature.

Non-mortgage and non-student loan licensees will pay no fee to renew their licenses.

How much does licensing cost in New Jersey?

To become a licensed contractor in New Jersey, you will need to obtain a Contractor Registration Certificate at a cost of $300, which is valid for one year. Additionally, there is a non-refundable fee of $110 bringing the total cost to roughly $410.

Penalties for unlicensed contractors in New Jersey

Contractors who do not register as required by the Contractors' Registration Act and continue to make home improvements or break any other laws can be fined up to $10,000 for the first offense and up to $20,000 for each additional offense.
