Calculating how many sheets of plywood you need

Our plywood calculator can help you determine how many sheets you’ll need for walls, roof sheathing, or concrete formwork. It converts area dimensions or total square footage into sheet count for 4’x8’, 4’x10’, or 4’x12’ panels with a customized waste factor. Note that this calculator can be used for any wood product, such as OSB, that comes in these sizes.Here’s how to calculate how many sheets of plywood you’ll need to cover a specific area:

Determine the total area by multiplying the length and width. (10’ x 12’ = 120 square feet)
Select the size of plywood sheet you need and determine its area. (4’ x 8’ = 32 square feet, 4’ x 10’ = 40 square feet, 4’ x 12’ = 48 square feet)
Divide the area to be covered by the square footage of the sheet size. (120 / 32 = 3.75 sheets)
Add a waste factor (usually 10-15%). (3.75 x 1.10 = 4.125 or 5 sheets)

Plywood sheet count = (Coverage area + Waste factor) / Sheet area
