How to calculate fence cost and materials

Here’s what you’ll need to know to use our fence calculator:
  • Fence length and height (feet)
  • Fence type
  • Wood privacy
  • Chain link
  • Vinyl
  • Aluminum
  • Post spacing (feet)
  • Number of gates
Once you click on the Calculate button, you’ll receive a list of materials and quantities, including posts, rails, pickets (wood fence only), and concrete (80-pound bags). Estimated costs for material and installation are also provided, including the cost per linear foot.Keep the following in mind when estimating fence costs and materials:
  • Set posts at least one-third of their total length into the ground (ex. a 6-foot fence needs 9-foot posts).
  • Use concrete to set every post. Friction-fit posts often loosen under lateral load and wind.
  • Confirm the property lines and local setback requirements before you start digging. Post locations can’t be moved after concrete cures.
