How to calculate flooring material quantities

The amount of flooring you’ll need for a room depends on the material type, size, and waste factor. Our calculator allows you to enter plank or tile dimensions for precise coverage calculations or use the default based on the flooring type. Note that traditional straight runs usually include 8-10% waste, while diagonal layouts typically include 10-15% waste. Here’s what you’ll need to know to use the flooring material calculator:
  • Room length and width (feet)
  • Flooring material:
  • Hardwood
  • Laminate
  • Vinyl plank
  • Tile
  • Carpet
  • Plank length and width in inches (optional, or leave blank to use industry standards)
  • Waste factor
  • Price per square foot (optional)
The calculator provides the room area, including waste; the coverage per box of material in square feet; the number of boxes you’ll need; and the estimated material cost.A couple of tips for ordering and installing flooring materials:
  • Acclimate hardwood flooring for 72 hours before installation to prevent expansion gaps.
  • Order from one lot number to ensure consistent stain and color across all boxes.

Example: How many boxes of laminate flooring for a 12’x12’ room?

Here’s an example showing how our flooring calculator determines the number of boxes of laminate flooring required for a 12' x 12’ room.Calculator inputs:
  • Room length and width: 12 feet x 12 feet
  • Flooring type: Laminate
  • Waste factor: 10%
Based on the inputs above, the calculator estimates the room's square footage, how much each box will cover, and the number of boxes needed. Here’s the breakdown:
  • Room area: 144 square feet
  • With waste: 158.40 square feet
  • Coverage per box: 20 square feet
  • Boxes needed: 8
