U pdate on -Damaged to Delightful Soaking Tub

Update: Our DIY main bath remodel is now completed: This is our retirement home but while keeping in mind aging in place, I still did not want to give up on a soaking tub- this was my solution. Hope you like it too.

The first night of soaking in a bubble bath was soooo worth the pain....

1st Post:

While in the process of DIY main bathroom remodeling we stumbled upon a damaged free-standing 70-inch soaking tub for less than $100.00.

We verified the extent of the damage was a crack in the fiberglass about 2 inches long and just below the tub rim. Having worked with fiberglass repairs on a boat we knew we could tackle this job.

Filling the cracked area with fiberglass and wet sanding left a smooth repair but the gel coat gloss of the tub was lost in the process.

Using Topside Marine Paint, a cost of less than $30.00 and available in several colors, allowed us to redefine our tub. I think it will add just the right wow factor we were hoping for. What do you think of our bargain?

Really love this. And yes - color. In a bathroom. needed - I am dead from the "spa" look.

just_janni, Like you, I am happy to see that gray everything (walls/floors/furniture) and white shaker cabinets are on their way out. Time to add some color back to this world!

Good save and love the blue, enjoy your pretty new bathroom. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us. I have a resin Vanity top that got damaged, one day I have to look into how to repair it.

How old are you? Ageing in place this will not be a tub you use if ever you get OLD. Maybe that's not your point but you brought it up and with no hand rails and the depth this is certainly not a choice unless you remain extremally healthy and agile. BUT GREAT DIY--I can 100% get behind the value you created!!!!

    arcy_gw-

Just an FYI: We have a very similar tub and find that the thin sides work just fine as something to grasp getting in and out, so I consider these to be my handrail.

Sorry but I don't think people realize what the needs are until the balance starts going, you get a new joint etc. I see nothing about this tub that will work for a person once age sets firmly in.

    It is a beautiful bathroom!!!
